About Me
As a scholar, I am invested in studying and critiquing connections between technical communication, social justice, NPOs, medical rhetorics, and identity construction.
As an advocate, I am committed to having all my work make a difference—through being critical of the language institutions employ to shape/ frame/act upon human life, by publishing research that calls teachers and writers to pay attention to and change the way such institutions use technical language as a tool of power and privilege, and by being an active member of my community by volunteering my time as a writer of grants for area NPOs.
As a teacher, I am driven to create spaces wherein students can engage with the complexities of writing both academically and non-academically. With a focus on advocacy, much of the work my students do in my classrooms is actually in partnership with NPOs in the greater La Crosse, WI area. I teach courses such as Grant Writing, Technical Writing, Introduction to Professional Writing, Feminist Rhetorics, Introduction to Rhetoric and Writing, and mentored over 45 student internships. In my time at UWL, the PW minor saw growth from 23 students in Fall 2010 to 80+ students in 2015. In service of that growth, I have been active in curriculum revision and management, having proposed three new courses. Prior to taking an administrative position, my focus was is on our rhetoric and writing major, where I fostered major curriculum revision processes as the rhetoric and writing section chair from 2015-2016.
As an administrator since 2016, I have been active in spearheading outreach, publicity, and interdiscplinary initiatives. Currently, I serve as one of two Associate Deans in the College of Arts, Social Sciences, & Humanities and at The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
